How it works in FileLume

  • The tool exports the canvas repeatedly, starting at quality 0.92 and decreasing by 0.08 until it reaches the target or reaches quality 0.20.
  • When the exact target cannot be reached, FileLume returns the smallest result it produced and labels it as best effort.

Best for

  • Job, visa, school, insurance, and profile forms with a published image-size cap.
  • Reducing a photo before uploading it to a portal that rejects large attachments.
  • Checking whether compression alone can meet a target before changing dimensions.

Format and quality guidance

  • JPG is normally the strongest option for photographic uploads when transparency is not needed.
  • PNG can be difficult to push under a strict target when it contains many colors or transparency.
  • WebP may reach a smaller result for destinations that accept it.

Trade-offs to expect

  • A smaller target requires more quality loss when the image has large dimensions or fine detail.
  • The target is not guaranteed because browser encoders and image content determine the final byte size.

Limitations

  • Images with very large dimensions may need resizing before quality reduction can reach 500KB or 200KB.
  • The current search stops at quality 0.20 rather than returning an unreadable image.

Common errors and fixes

The result is still above the target.
Resize the width and height first, then run target-size compression again.
Small text became hard to read.
Use a less aggressive target or reduce dimensions carefully instead of repeating compression.
The portal rejects WebP.
Choose JPG when the destination lists only JPG or JPEG.
